“THIS IS A much more fitting space for you,” Vrom said, his voice carrying across the spacious room deep in the basement of The Archives.

The new Vault had been renovated over the last month from a storage space for old, unused books and records of the Brotherhood, to a secured, personal workspace for Lornai. All the contents of her family's small hidden vault inside The Archives had been moved here, along with all her possessions retrieved from her secret cavern lair;

Lornai sat, back straight as usual, on a tall wooden library stool. She furiously sketched schematics on a large roll of blueprint paper. Vrom joined her at the table, standing by her side. Her project appeared to be complex calculations involving serious renovations to the inner workings of the Sphere. She continued to work, flipping between her drawings and another set of yellowed, fragile-looking notes and diagrams in an ancient journal, albeit written in her distinctively flowing script.

“I couldn’t continue working in that closet,” Lornai replied, without looking up.

“Have you had time to peruse any of the resources here?” Vrom asked.

“I am not amused,” she said dryly.

“Have you come across a copy of Quinil's Theory on Flux Dynamics, by any chance?” he asked quietly.

Lornai stopped writing and walked across the room to a tightly packed shelf.

“I apologize for snapping. Whatever they have done to the essences is maddening. The philosophical rhetoric we discussed the other night made me try to focus even harder to find the solutions I need to fix the Sphere. I looked through Quinil's once already. Perhaps you will have better luck than I did.” She walked back over, handing Vrom the tome he had requested.

He paused and stared at Lornai. She acted peculiar, and something bothered her, but he decided not to push.

Vrom pulled up a library stool and fingered through the brittle pages. “I have a theory about part of the problem, but I need to confirm something,” he said.

Lornai returned to the large desk. They both worked in silence for quite some time until Vrom closed the book and turned toward Lornai.

“The time dilation Dashira and I experienced explained part of our issue,” he said enthusiastically.

Lornai took off her spectacles, folding them delicately. “You have my attention,” she said.

“Our research the other night started me thinking about things, as well. Philosophy can free the mind. I thought I remembered an obscure passage in Quinil's that might be applicable, a footnote, actually. I won’t take the time to explain everything. Suffice it to say, based upon numerous proven formulas, a mass quantity of Flux transformed from its natural state to another form and stored could potentially cause a time dilation. The greater the mass, the longer the time, the larger the dilation. If that is true, it also could explain the extreme shifting in weather. In fact, I am quite surprised there have not been other effects.”

Lornai responded with silent blinking, her eyes a bit unfocused, reflecting her concentration on Vrom's words and ideas. Vrom waited patiently for any reaction or reply.
